A water filtration system is needed for well water, but it can also be a good idea to have one in the home even if you're connected to the city's water supply system. The right filter can remove contaminants that are left behind from the city's filtering system and help keep your water clean and pure in case of excess pollution, heavy metals, and the like. Since there are so many different types of systems available, note a few tips on how to choose the best one for your home.

1. Undersink

If you only want to remove some basic contaminants from your water and don't want to choose anything too expensive, you might choose an undersink model of filter. This is mounted under one sink in particular, usually the kitchen sink, and it removes contaminants from the water as it reaches that area of the faucet. This type of system is easier to maintain than a system hooked up to your home's entire plumbing system, as the filter is easy to reach and to replace. Since it's not filtering all the water in your home, the filter may also not need to be removed and changed as often as a whole-house system, making it more cost-effective in the long run.

2. Plumbed-in separate faucet

A plumbed-in separate faucet system uses a filter at a particular plumbing connection, and the filtered water is then dispensed through a separate faucet. This type of system can be good for when you only need filtered water for specific uses, such as for preparing medications or if you're running a commercial food prep business from your home. In those cases you may be required to have filtered water that meets certain legal standards, and this separate system will ensure that only properly filtered water is available at that faucet.

3. Plumbed-in whole-house system

To ensure water from every tap and faucet is clean, a whole-house plumbed-in system is best, but this is usually the most expensive and most complicated to install. This water filter system will add a filter at the point of entry for water to your home, where it comes in from the municipal feed. These systems work with cold water pipes, so if you're concerned about sediment building up in the hot water, you might also install a hot water filtration system separately. This will remove sediment and other contaminants from water as it flows from your home's hot water heater.
